The Seven Joys and Sorrows of Saint Joseph — Fifth Prayer

Fifth Prayer

O GLORIOUS St. Joseph, glorious ambassador of the Most Holy Trinity! By the extreme affliction which the Angel’s command to fly into Egypt caused thy heart, and by the joy thou didst feel at seeing the idols overturned by the arrival of the Living God, grant that, by destroying every taint of our sin, the empire of our passions may be destroyed in our hearts.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.

St. Joseph, pray for us!

Feast Day of St. Joseph the Worker

Excellencies of a prince and a worker

Providence desired to ennoble the working class, deigning that the foster father of Jesus also be a manual labourer, fulfilling the profession of a carpenter. In this way, Saint Joseph united the two extremes of the social ladder in the internal harmony of his sanctity and his person. He was at the pinnacle as a Prince of the house of David, but an impoverished Prince, who drew from his artisan’s labour the sustenance of the Holy Family.

As a worker, he knew how to be humble and render the due respect to those who were superior to him. As a prince, he also knew the mission he was entrusted with, and he fulfilled it in a magnificent way, contributing to the preservation, defence and earthly glorification of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The Eternal Father place this Treasure in his hands, the greatest treasure that ever was and ever will be in the history of the universe! And such hands can only be those of an authentic leader and ruler, a man of great prudence and of profound discernment, as well as of elevated affection, in order to surround the Son of God made man with the necessary adoring and venerable tenderness.

At the same time, he was a man ready to face, with perspicacity and firmness, any difficulty that presented itself: whether of a spiritual and interior nature, or those originating from the persecutions of Our Lord’s adversaries.

Consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary

Prayer asking for the Blessings of Our Lady

We ask Thee, O Mother, that from highest Heaven may descend upon us, Thy children, the maternal blessings born of Thy inexhaustible affection.

Like the Disciples at Emmaus to the Divine Redeemer, we ask Thee that these blessings “remain with us”, “because night is falling” over the world.

At every instant, at every anguish, at every necessity, help us to maintain them with the most entire and filial confidence in Thee.

Prayer to Saint Joseph

O most glorious Saint Joseph, Virginal Father of Jesus and Chaste Spouse of Mary. Patriarch and Protector of the Holy Church, to whom the Eternal Father entrusted the care of governing and defending the Holy Family on earth. Protect us also, who belong as faithful Catholics, to the holy family of thy Son, who is the Church, and send us the necessary goods of this life, and above all the spiritual help for eternal life. Amen.
